This Week's Fix:

The Drop Off Map

Here's the Rundown...

I bought a lot of courses over the years, and somewhere around module three I stalled out of almost every one of them. Every time, I decided it was my fault. Not disciplined enough, too busy, should have tried harder.

For about five years I also led tech and marketing for a big online coaching company. Happy students, glowing testimonials, people upgrading into the higher programs. And nobody was tracking who actually finished. When the market shifted and those upgrades started dropping, somebody finally asked where people were falling off, and nobody on the team could answer it.

Almost every program has one spot where people stall, it is usually the same spot for most of them, and almost nobody is standing there when it happens. A client who stalls does not get the result, and a client without the result does not send you a testimonial, refer her friend, or come back for the next thing. She drifts off a little embarrassed, and you never hear why.

Today you are going to find your spot and put one kind message there. Five minutes, no analytics dashboard required.

The 5-Minute Breakdown...

Step 1: Map Your Program (1 minute)

  • Write your program as a line of steps: modules, sessions, milestones, whatever your version is
  • Under each one, note what the client has to DO there, and roughly how long it takes
  • Selling 1:1? Your steps are your sessions plus the homework in between
  • Rough is fine. Napkin-sketch rough

Step 2: Find the Three Tells (1.5 minutes)

Open the Drop-Off Diagnostic and mark each step that fits:

  • The Silence. Where do the questions stop? That spot where your inbox, community, or calls go from chatty to crickets
  • The Heavy Lift. Where does learning turn into doing? The first step with a blank page, a real decision, or a tool she has never opened
  • The Long Gap. Where is the longest stretch with nothing from you? No call, no email, no check-in
  • Wherever two tells land on the same step, circle it. That is your drop-off spot

Step 3: Write One Check-In (1.5 minutes)

Open the Still With Me Check-In Scripts and grab the one that matches your tell. Every script runs the same four beats:

  • Tells her that getting stuck right here is normal, and says it about the step rather than about her
  • Names the specific step, so she knows you are paying attention
  • Hands her one action small enough to finish in ten minutes
  • Gives her a one-word way to ask for help, so she never has to explain herself

Leave out anything that asks her to report on her progress. A woman who is behind will not answer that question.

Step 4: Put It Where It Will Actually Happen (1 minute)

  • An automated email triggered at that step, if your platform can do it
  • A recurring calendar reminder if it cannot. Done beats elegant
  • Then send it by hand to anyone sitting at that step right now, including the ones from months ago. Especially those

Next Steps...

Send it to the stalled ones today. You almost certainly have people parked at that step right now. The Check-In Scripts have a message written specifically for someone who went quiet months ago, and it gets replies from people you assumed were gone.

Then shrink the step itself. Break your hardest step into two or three smaller ones with visible finish lines. Same content, more places to feel done. This does more for completion than anything else you could change.

Run the map again next quarter. Your program changes, your clients change, and your drop-off spot moves. Five minutes, twice a year, is plenty.
